If Iga Swiatek defeats Jessica Pegula in the WTA Finals on Monday in Cancun, Mexico, she will take her place atop the world rankings once again.
In order to get to the final, Swiatek defeated Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus, who took her place as the world's top seed after 75 straight weeks, 6-3 6-2.
The 22-year-old Pole wants to be the top finisher for a second straight season.
"It's still a long way away because I feel like tomorrow's match will be the toughest one," Swiatek said.
"After the game tomorrow, we can discuss it. I'll just carry on with my current course of action."
To get to the final in Mexico, American Pegula, 29, defeated US Open champion Coco Gauff.
Rain postponed the semi-final after three games, but on Saturday, four-time major winner Swiatek secured her tenth straight victory.
On Sunday, play resumed, and Swiatek broke Sabalenka's serve right away, saving a break point to lead 4-1, and serving out the opening set.
Sabalenka, this year's runner-up at the US Open and champion at the Australian Open, was unable to generate any more opportunities as Swiatek broke twice in the second set to complete a victory that matched her 2022 total of 67 victories.
This week, neither Swiatek nor Pegula have released a set. They have received 1,080 ranking points and £1.2 million in prize money; the winner will receive an additional £1.1 million and 420 points.
